Oosterscheldekering

The Oosterschelde Barrier is a storm surge barrier that is part of the Delta Works and was built between 1976 and 1986. This barrier is located in the Oosterschelde, between the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland. The Oosterschelde Barrier is 9 kilometers long and is a movable dam. When a high water level of 3 meters or more is expected, the sluices close. The construction of the Oosterschelde Barrier was a direct result of the North Sea flood of 1953.

Neeltje Jans

Neeltje Jans, as an artificial island, is part of the Oosterschelde Barrier. After the completion of the Delta Works, an information and theme park was opened on Neeltje Jans. The information center has an exhibition about the Delta Works with (visual) information. The name Neeltje Jans comes from the boat that ran aground on the sandbank; it is an old folk name for the protective goddess Nehalennia.
